⚠️Scam Alert - Fake QR Codes on Parking Machines in Telford & Wrekin
We want to make people aware of a scam that’s recently popped up around Telford & Wrekin. Fake QR code stickers have been found on some pay‑and‑display machines in council‑run car parks. They look real at first glance but scanning them takes you to a fake payment website designed to steal your details. [shropshirelive.com]
What’s happening?
Scammers have been sticking their own QR codes over the machines, making it look like an alternative way to pay. If you scan one, it can take you to a fake version of a parking app, and that’s where people are entering card details without realising. This is the correct link that it should take you to, if it’s a legitimate QR code - https://secure.mipermit.com/telfordwrekin/application/home.aspx
How to spot a fake
- Check whether the QR code is printed on the machine — if it’s a sticker, avoid it and only use the MiPermit app or pay directly at the machine.
- If you scan the QR code and its not the official link above, it’s a fake! The fake page was called ‘Ring Go’
- If you’re in a private car park, always check the official signage before paying.
